Is “Capacity” Defined for Source Recovery & Learning Problems?

چکیده

This paper presents “strong” limits on the number of samples required for recovery in the domains of compressive sensing, matrix-completion and model-selection. In other words, the paper determines lower-bounds on systems parameters; where if these lower bounds are not met, then any recovery algorithm will be guaranteed to be erroneous with high probability. A common mathematical framework is presented which is subsequently used to develop such lower bounds for each of these three domains. These lower bounds, along with existing achievability arguments is used to argue that a notion of “capacity” analogous to Shannon capacity of communication systems exists for certain recovery/learning problems.

Using life cycle assessment for municipal solid waste management in Tehran Municipality Region 20

Background: Due to the lack of a proper waste management system, Tehran Municipality Region 20 is facing economic and environmental problems such as the high costs of a disposal system and source pollution. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a method for collecting and evaluating the inputs, outputs, and potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle. The current stud...

Policy Capacity in the Learning Healthcare System; Comment on “Health Reform Requires Policy Capacity”

Pierre-Gerlier Forest and his colleagues make a strong argument for the need to expand policy capacity among healthcare actors. In this commentary, I develop an additional argument in support of Forest et al view. Forest et al rightly point to the need to have embedded policy experts to successfully translate healthcare reform policy into healthcare change. Translation of externally generated i...

A Benders Decomposition Method to Solve an Integrated Logistics Network Designing Problem with Multiple Capacities

In this paper, a new model is proposed for the integrated logistics network designing problem. In many research papers in this area, it is assumed that there is only one option for the capacity of each facility in the network. However, this is not a realistic assumption because generally there may be many possible options for the capacity of the facility that is being established. Usually the c...

Forward - Backward greedy algorithms for signal demixing

Signal demixing arises in many applications. Common among these are the separation of sparse and low rank components in image and video processing, sparse and group sparse models in multitask learning and spikes and sinusoids in source separation problems. For specific problems of interest, many methods exist to perform recovery, but an approach that generalizes to arbitrary notions of simplici...
